Peab has been commissioned to build a new laboratory for laboratory medicine at the University Hospital of Umeå. The customer is Region Västerbotten and the contract is worth SEK 692 million.
The existing laboratory facilitiesat the University Hospital of Umeå were built in the 1960s and are not suitable for the automated systems of the future. They are also in some ways underdimensioned for current needs. The new laboratory building will provide a place for the diagnostic platforms of the future as well as cutting-edge research. The objective is to produce a greater number of analyses, with higher quality and efficiency, regardless of the time of day. The building will be constructed on the hospital site and comprise just over 16,500 m2.
"We began collaborating with Region Västerbotten at an early stage in this project, which was advantageous since we could contribute our construction expertise right from the planning and design phase. Building in a hospital environment with complex installations and where regular operations must continue without disruption is always a challenge. Because we have a strong local organization with our own craftsmen and extensive experience from similar projects in complex environments, we have a very good platform for a successful project," says Susanne Hallberg, Region Manager Peab.
"It feels great to now be able to take the next step in this project. This is a major and vital investment in the region's properties, entailing a better working environment and many new opportunities for laboratory medicine," says Fredrik Wirenblad, Operations Manager at Property in Region Västerbotten.
The project is a turnkey contract in partnership. Work started in June 2026 and the new laboratory building is expected to be completed in 2029.
This project is being implemented in several phases. Initially, a so-called phase 1 contract was signed where Peab was contracted to work with Region Västerbotten to optimize the project with the right quality and handle risks and uncertainties. The first call-off for phase 2, which entailed signing a construction contract, began in December 2025 when Peab was commissioned to carry out time-critical work such as demolition, remediation, foundation work and ordering a frame. Nowthe remaining part of phase 2, which involves the construction of the laboratory building, has been ordered.
The project will be order registered in business area Construction in the second quarter 2026.
